A UNIQUE AND EXCITING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

HOPES Center’s Street Outreach Team is made up of several small teams that serve on different nights. HOPES will have openings for Street Outreach Volunteers on its Tuesday Night and Thursday Night Street Outreach Teams this fall and winter. It is an opportunity to serve people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Racine, and to see our community in a very different way.

Street Outreach Volunteers serve one night per week as part of a 2-3-person street outreach team, either on Tuesday or Thursday from 9 p.m. until around midnight. We are looking for Street Outreach Volunteers who can serve from October 2026 to May 2027.  Training is provided and each team is led by an experienced street outreach team leader.

Volunteers are full members of their team and learn how to locate, approach and initiate contact with someone who may be homeless and living on the streets. Volunteers help provide basic assistance and build relationships with people with the objective of connecting them to services that will help them end their homelessness.

HOPES currently has two experience team leaders who serve on the same team on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  Additional Street Outreach Volunteers will allow us to split the team leaders into different teams and have more shifts, better coverage, and better service on the streets during the week.  Our teams are small, so just a few committed Street Outreach Volunteers would make a big difference in how many people we can reach and how much time we are able to spend with them while we are out on the streets at night.

Street Outreach Teams serve in all weather conditions and temperatures. In the fall and winter, there are fewer people living on the streets, but there are still people there, even on the coldest nights and in critical conditions. Teams serve people in many different types of locations and situations. Some walking is usually involved, often while carrying about 5 – 10 lbs of supplies (water, coffee, socks, blankets, hand warmers, etc.). Team members build relationships with their teammates and the people who they serve on the streets. Some warm socks, a cup of hot coffee and a word of encouragement goes a long way as we help people find their path out of homelessness.
